1989 -1999
My mother with her new granddaughter a few days after her birth.
1990 was a year that changed us. While in Naples, Italy my wife started to see doctors since she could not get pregnant. The Navy doctor did a test using a dye to see if there was any blockage. The doctor did not see anything. We went to a church that was run by missionaries. The wife said she had a doctor she used. He had the first test tube baby in Italy. His wife was an American and a register nurse. We took the x-ray from the Navy hospital and his wife saw my wife had Endometriosis that the Navy doctor did not see.
She had to see the doctor regularly and a fertility doctor. The doctor did microsurgery to take care of the Endometriosis. They also wanted a donation from me to see if she could get pregnant. I knew she wouldn't since she had surgery. Once back home she did get pregnant at least 3 times but ended up having a miscarriage. She saw several different doctors who could not figure out why. Doctor at Kaiser told her that inner uterine wall wouldn't build up so the miscarriage. We signed up with several adoption agencies but most did not have new born or wanted open adoptions which gave the birth parents the right to visit.
While working at 1st Los Angeles Bank an officer heard through several people that a couple wanted to give a child up for adoption. They had 2 daughters and living with a family member in a trailer. They could not afford a third child. We got all the legal paperwork done so when the baby was born we could legally take the child from hospital. On May 1st we got the call the birth mother went into labor. We drove to Riverside and when it looked like it was going to take longer. We got a motel room to get some sleep. We got up early and went back to the hospital. The labor was more intense and my wife was in the room with the husband and birth mother. We got things arrange with the hospital to take her the next day. We went back to the motel and slept and next day went back to the hospital and had a GM car seat. Drove home and went by my parents.
Wife's older sister and brother-in-law were her Godparents. The priest that married us, baptized our daughter into the Catholic faith. We moved out of the apartment we had moved into when I got out of the Navy which was across from Lanark Park. We moved again so our daughter could live in a better place. We lived on Topanga Canyon Blvd across from Warner Center Park in Woodland Hills. They had free concerts in the summer. When she turned one we had a small party for family and friends at the community hall at the apartment complex.
Once the wife went back to work we had found someone that would watch our daughter. After a year they were going to move from the house they were renting to a house they bought in area not close. I found someone close to where I was working. Then sent her to Farm School in Woodland Hills at the time my father was doing their payroll. Daughter learn to swim there since they used Red Cross qualified swimmers. They also had all kinds of animals.
One of her first concerts was a free one at the park. We saw Air Supply one of our favorite groups. When she was 4 we took her to Knott's Berry Farm since we wanted to see how she would do. When she was 5 spent 2 days at Disneyland. The motel we stayed at was against the Disneyland parking lot and before they built the California Adventure. My family was to meet us on the second day. She had so much fun seeing all the characters from the Disney movies. Cinderella was her favorite since she was blond like her and her bedroom was done in Cinderella.
At Superior Court in Van Nuys where we legally adopted our daughter. She was officially our child. She knew she was adopted when she was old enough to understand. When she was old enough we were willing to help find her birth parents and sisters but she didn't want to. Almost cried in front of her making me feel proud that we were her only parents.
January 17, 1994 the Northridge Earthquake hit. It was a 6.7 and we were 5 miles from the Epicenter. The apartment was yellow tagged which meant we could go in it but could not live there. We found a house to rent and we moved into it after several weeks. One of my father's clients was a trucking company and they brought trailer to load up with all our stuff. The people had not moved out yet so we put all our stuff into the garage at the house since we put new locks on the door and lock on garage door.
